Abdul-Mateen II was born on 15 July 1986. He is currently 36 years old in 2023. He was in New Orleans, Louisiana, to a Muslim father, Yahya Abdul-Mateen I (1945–2007), and a Christian mother, Mary. Abdul has 5 other siblings he grew up with.
He attended attended McClymonds High School. At McClymonds, he was an athlete (he played against future NFL champion Marshawn Lynch) and a self-described geek who enjoyed chess. He also graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in architecture, and then worked as a city planner in San Francisco.
Unfortunately, he was laid off from his job and he used this opportunity to apply to drama schools. He was at New York University Tisch School of the Arts, the Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University, and Yale School of Drama. Abdul went on to graduate from Yale with a Master of Fine Arts degree and worked as a stage actor.
