Early Life

Born on 17th August, 1986 (35 years-old currently) in Brooklyn, New York to Rae Gay and Rudy Gay Sr., former lead singer of the R&B group Ace Spectrum and band director for The Stylistics.

Gay began playing competitive recreational basketball at the age of 12 in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland.

Rudy Gay began playing for the nationally renowned Cecil-Kirk AAU program under coach Anthony Lewis when he was 14 years old.


Career

Gay attended Baltimore County’s Eastern Technical High School, a magnet school in Essex, for his first two years of high school basketball.

Both years, he was a member of the varsity basketball team. The Mavericks made their first and only trip to the state semi-finals in his second season at Eastern Tech.

He began his junior year with Eastern Tech, but in September 2002, he transferred to Archbishop Spalding in Severn.

He started playing basketball for Spalding as a junior in 2002–03, receiving first-team All-Baltimore Catholic League accolades as a junior and senior, as well as being named co-player of the year by the Baltimore Sun as a senior.

After averaging 21.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game as a senior, he was named the Washington Post All-Met Basketball Player of the Year, a McDonald’s All-American, and a Parade first-team All-American.

Gay had expressed a desire to attend Maryland and said that he grew up rooting for the team, but he ultimately chose UConn for his college career.

As a sophomore at UConn, he led the Huskies in scoring (15.2 points per game) while also averaging 6.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 30.8 minutes per game.

The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) recognized him first-team All-America, and he was named to the 2006 Washington, D.C. Regional All-Tournament Team.

On April 24, 2006, Gay declared for the 2006 NBA draft.

The Houston Rockets drafted Gay with the eighth overall pick in the 2006 NBA draft, and traded him and Stromile Swift to the Memphis Grizzlies on July 12 in exchange for Shane Battier.
When the Grizzlies acquired Gay, he immediately signed a rookie scale contract with the organization.

He spent 7 seasons at the Grizzlies before being moved to the Toronto Raptors, He became the first player to lead two teams in scoring in the same season since Stephon Marbury in 2003–04.

He averaged 19.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.73 steals and 34.7 minutes in 33 games (32 starts) with Toronto.

Raptors traded Gay, along with Quincy Acy and Aaron Gray, to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Greivis Vásquez, John Salmons, Chuck Hayes and Patrick Patterson the Raptors traded Gay.
He has subsequently moved to Spurs and currently with the Utah Jazz presently.


Gay’s national team successes

Gay led the United States to its first FIBA World Championship gold medal since 1994 in 2010, averaging 7.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.0 steals in 13.4 minutes for the undefeated Americans in nine games.

In 2014, he was a member of the national squad that won gold at the FIBA Basketball World Cup after another unbeaten season.
