Romney was born on 12 March 1947 at Harper University Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He was one of four children born to his parents George W. Romney and former actress and homemaker Lenore Romney. His siblings include Margo, Jane and Scott.
He attended public elementary schools until seventh grade. He also completed Cranbrook School. He also attended Stanford University during the 1965–1966 academic year. His father became very well known in print and media and so he chose to work as an intern in the governor’s office after his father’s successful 1962 Michigan gubernatorial campaign.

Before becoming a politician, Mitt was a Mormon missionary. In his political career, he first registered as an Independent and voted in the 1992 presidential primaries for the Democratic former senator from Massachusetts, Paul Tsongas. In 1993, he decided to challenge incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy, who was seeking reelection to a sixth term. That same year in October 1993, he changed his political affiliation to Republican and also stepped down from his church leadership role in 1994.
On 2 January 2003, he was sworn in as the 70th governor of Massachusetts. He also declined a governor’s salary of $135,000 during his term. Romney announced his candidacy for the 2008 Republican nomination for president on February 13, 2007, in Dearborn, Michigan. His campaign speech was about his experiences in the private, public, and voluntary sectors that had brought him to this point.
