Mary was born on 11 January 1971 to nurse Cora and jazz musician Thomas Blige. She has siblings namely LaTonya Blige-DaCosta, Bruce Miller, and a younger half-sister, Jonquell. As a young child, Mary sang in a Pentecostal church.

After dropping out of high school. She recalled messing her life with drugs and harassment. Despite these, Mary spent a short time in a Yonkers band named Pride with band drummer Eddie D’Aprile. In 1988, she recorded an impromptu cover of Anita Baker’s “Caught Up in the Rapture”.
