Wheeler embarked on his professional wrestling career in 2005, adopting the ring name “Steven Walters.” He honed his skills on the independent circuit, showcasing his abilities in promotions like NWA Anarchy, OMEGA Championship Wrestling, Resistance Pro Wrestling, and Dragon Gate USA. During his time with NWA Anarchy, Wheeler achieved notable success by clinching both the NWA Anarchy Television Championship and the NWA Anarchy Tag Team Championship.

In 2014, Wheeler’s journey took a significant turn when he signed with WWE and assumed the name Dash Wilder. Dusty Rhodes, the legendary figure in professional wrestling, played a pivotal role in christening him “Dash.” Although Wheeler initially preferred the name “Cash,” Rhodes felt that “Dash” resonated with Cody Rhodes’ “Dashing” nickname, while “Wilder” was chosen for its resemblance to Wheeler’s original surname.
Teaming up with Scott Dawson, the duo formed a formidable tag team known as The Mechanics. They made their presence felt on the July 17, 2014, episode of NXT, marking the beginning of their tenure with the company.
