A very much improved player now with an immense court vision, Cameron Payne is certainly not the player from his Rookie days anymore.

He has matured so much and fitted in well at the Suns in the Point Guard role learning a lot from the point god CP3.

The American, Payne, was born on 8th August, 1994 in Memphis, Tennessee, USA to Tony and Leshawn Payne.

He is a player for the Phoenix Suns in the NBA.

 


Career

Cameron Payne went to Memphis, Tennessee’s Lausanne Collegiate School.

He went from a freshman height of 5’5′ to a senior height of 6’0′. Payne was not a well scouted player by NCAA programs after leading Lausanne Collegiate to a Division II state victory in Tennessee in 2013.

Rivals.com rated him as a three-star recruit, but he was not among the top 100 prospects.

William Small recruited him to play collegiate basketball for Murray State, and he chose the Racers over a few other colleges.

Payne went from being a relatively unknown college recruit to a possible lottery pick in the NBA.

Cameron Payne averaged 16.8 points, 5.4 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game as a rookie.

Due to an injury to Zay Jackson, he was forced to start at point guard as a freshman, and he started his collegiate career with 21 points, five rebounds, and four assists in the team’s opener against Valparaiso. Payne was voted first-team All-OVC and was named the conference’s freshman of the year.

After averaging 20.2 points, 6.0 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game as a sophomore, he was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year.

After his second season, Payne decided to enter the NBA Draft.

The Oklahoma City Thunder selected Payne with the 14th overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft.

He signed his rookie scale contract with the Thunder on July 10, 2015.

In a 117–93 win over the Denver Nuggets on November 1, he made his Thunder debut, recording three assists in four minutes.

In the Thunder’s regular season finale on April 12, 2016, Payne recorded career highs of 17 points and seven assists in a 102–98 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

Payne was dealt to the Chicago Bulls on February 23, 2017, along with Joffrey Lauvergne and Anthony Morrow, for Taj Gibson, Doug McDermott, and a 2018 second-round selection pick.

Payne had multiple assignments with the Windy City Bulls, the Bulls’ D-League affiliate, during the 2016–17 season.

He was waived and he signed a 10-day contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers and later released upon his contract expiration.

After Cavs he featured for the Toronto Raptors, Chines basketball side the Shanxi Loongs before signing for G-League side the Texas Legends who are an affiliate of NBA side the Dallas Mavericks.

During the week of March 3, 2020, Payne was named the NBA G-League Player of the Week, averaging 23.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 10.3 assists, 2.7 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game while leading the Legends to a perfect 3-0 record for the week.

Payne signed a two-year deal with the Phoenix Suns on June 30, 2020.

On July 31, he made his NBA Bubble debut, scoring nine points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals in a 125–112 win over the Washington Wizards with a plus-minus of +21.

Cameron Payne helped the Suns reach the NBA Finals in 2021, but they were defeated by the Milwaukee Bucks in a six-game series.

Payne had a career-high 16 assists in a 115–114 win over the New York Knicks on March 4, 2022.
