Thomas Keller Biography
Keller was born in Pendleton, California, United States on 14 October 1955. His mother was a restaurateur and Thomas used to help when her cook falls sick. Later in life, moved and settled in Palm Beach after his parents divorced. In this new location, Keller started work as a dishwasher and later as a cook at the Palm Beach Yacht Club. He grew much passion for cooking here.
Thomas was discovered later by French-born Master Chef Roland Henin who employed him as a cook at the Dunes Club. Keller revealed that he learned a lot of classical French cooking from Roland Henin. After working at the Dunes Club for some time, Thomas worked at various cooking positions in Florida and finally as a cook at a small French restaurant called La Rive in the Hudson River valley in Catskill, New York. Three years after being with La Rive, Keller moved to New York and later to Paris apprenticing at various Michelin-starred restaurants.
In 1984, Thomas was hired as chef de cuisine at La Reserve in New York. He later left to open Rakel in early 1987. In 1992, Thomas came upon an old French steam laundry in Yountville, California that was been used as a restaurant. He spent 19 months raising $1.2 million from acquaintances and investors to purchase the restaurant. Thomas later reopened the restaurant in 1994 and years later earned numerous awards from the James Beard Foundation, gourmet magazines, the Mobil Guide (five stars), and the Michelin Guide (three stars). Keller has also written several cookbooks on his experiences with his different restaurants, covering the nuances of French cooking with it.
