Shai Gilgeous-Alexander whose full name is Shaivonte Aician Gilgeous-Alexander (born July 12, 1998) is a Canadian professional basketball player for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Charlotte Hornets selected Gilgeous-Alexander with the 11th overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft, and he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers the same night.  


In his first season with the Clippers, he was nominated to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team before being traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder on July 10, 2019, along with Danilo Gallinari and numerous future first-round selections in exchange for NBA All-Star Paul George.

Early Life

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and grew up in Hamilton, Ontario.

His mother, Antiguan mother Charmaine Gilgeous, is a former track star who competed for Antigua and Barbuda at the 1992 Summer Olympics and his dad, Vaughn Alexander, coached him as a youth.

His mother’s handmade lasagna is his favorite dish.

Fashion and design are two things that he is passionate about.

Pre-game, he does not listen to music.

Career

During his one season at Kentucky, he started 24 games and averaged 14.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.65 steals in 33.7 minutes per game, shooting 48.5 percent from the field, 40.4 percent from outside the arc, and 81.7 percent from the free throw line.

His Assists, steals and three-point field goal percentage were all tops on the squad.

Only three freshman in Kentucky history have amassed more than 61 steals.

In terms of points, he was second on the team.

In 2018, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named MVP of the SEC Tournament. All-SEC Freshman Team and All-SEC Second Team selections. On January 15, he was selected SEC Freshman of the Week.

On April 9, 2018, he declared for the 2018 NBA Draft.

The Charlotte Hornets selected Gilgeous-Alexander with the 11th overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft, and he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers the same night.

His next chapter was in the NBA Summer League of 2018 where he showed his class.

In his sole season w3ith the Clippers he was named a member of the World Team representing Canada for the 2019 Rising Stars Challenge.


With 20 points, 10 assists, and a career-high 20 rebounds he recorded his first career triple double in a 117–104 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, Gilgeous-Alexander became the second player in the previous 30 years, after Russell Westbrook, to score a 20–20–10 stat line, and the youngest ever to do it.

Gilgeous-Alexander scored a career-high 42 points in a 102-99 win over the San Antonio Spurs.

On August 3, 2021, Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder agreed to a 5 year, $172 million rookie extension that will become a 5 year, $207 million Rookie Max extension if Gilgeous-Alexander is included on an All-NBA Team.
