Rajon  Rondo, a professional basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers, was born on February 22, 1986.

Early Life

Rajon Rondo was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on February 22, 1986, to Amber Rondo and William Sr.

He has three brothers and sisters.

When Rajon was seven years old, his father abandoned the family, leaving his mother to care for herself and the children.

His mother, a strong woman, worked tirelessly to raise the children on her own.

Rondo was initially interested in football, but his mother persuaded him to switch to basketball because she believed it would be less taxing on his frail frame.


Career

He attended Eastern High School for three years, during which time he developed an interest in basketball.

He was a valuable member of his school’s team, earning All-State accolades and being awarded the 7th Region Player of the Year.

For his senior year, he transferred to Virginia’s Oak Hill Academy, where he shattered Jeff McInnis’ single-season assist record of 303 while averaging a double-double.

Rondo committed to Kentucky over hometown Louisville.

He, along with teammates Joe Crawford and Randolph Morris, were instrumental in the Kentucky’s team’s successes.

Rondo was also nominated to participate in the USA Men’s Under-21 World Championship Team in 2005, and he helped the team capture a gold medal at the Global Games in late July in Texas.

Following the 2005–06 NCAA season, Rondo announced he would forgo his final two seasons at Kentucky and enter the 2006 NBA draft.

The Phoenix Suns selected Rajon Rondo in the 2006 NBA Draft then traded him to the Boston Celtics. He was selected first overall in the draft as a point guard.

He started out playing a supporting role during the initial phase of his career. In his rookie season he played in only 25 matches.

Rondo lacked a jump shot so he usually drives to the rim for a layup.

In his first season the Celtics finished the season with a 24–58 win-loss record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Rondo earned a starting spot in the 2007–08 season after Telfair and West were traded during the offseason.

He started every game.

He soon established himself as a dependable, consistent player surrounded by All-Stars Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen.

Rajon led the Boston Celtics to the NBA championship in 2008 as the Celtics defeated the Lakers 4–2, giving Rondo his first NBA championship ring.

After a series of injuries, In December 2014, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks along with Dwight Powell for Jae Crowder, Jameer Nelson, and Brandan Wright.

Since then he has played for the Kings, Bulls, Pelicans, Hawks, Clippers and had two stints with the LA Lakers.


On July 8, 2019, Rondo re-signed with the Lakers, and went on to win the 2020 NBA Finals, winning his second, his first in 12 years.

Rondo’s 105 assists in the 2020 NBA playoffs are the most by a bench player in a single postseason since the 1971 playoffs, surpassing Manu Ginóbili’s 95 assists in 2014.

On January 3, 2022, the Lakers traded Rondo to the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of a three-team deal that also included the New York Knicks.
