James Monteinez Wiseman (born March 31, 2001) is a professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association for the Golden State Warriors.

He was a member of the Memphis Tigers basketball team in college.

He plays the center position for the Warriors and stands at 7 feet 0 inches (2.13 m) tall.

In the 2020 NBA draft, he was selected as the second overall pick behind Anthony Edwards

Career

Wiseman attended The Ensworth School in Nashville, Tennessee, for his freshman year before moving to Memphis East High School, where he was coached by veteran NBA star Penny Hardaway.

Wiseman was a unanimous five-star recruit as a senior, with most recruiting services ranking him first in the 2019 class.

After his final season, he won many national player of the year awards and appeared in the McDonald’s All-American Game.

At the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship in Formosa, Argentina, Wiseman averaged 11.4 points and five rebounds per game for the United States.

He was instrumental in his team’s gold medal victory over Canada.

Due to an injury, Wiseman was unable to join the United States for the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup.

Wiseman entered Memphis in college to play for Hardaway, who had since become the Tigers’ coach.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) punished him early in his rookie season, claiming that Hardaway had behaved as a booster by aiding Wiseman’s move to Memphis, Tennessee in 2017.

He completed half of his suspension before dropping out of school to prepare for the NBA draft in 2020.

The Golden State Warriors selected Wiseman with the second overall choice in the 2020 NBA draft.

In a 125–99 loss against the Brooklyn Nets on December 22, 2020, he made his NBA debut with 19 points, six rebounds, and two steals.

Wiseman had a torn right meniscus, which was discovered on April 11, 2021. Wiseman had successful surgery on his torn meniscus on April 15 and was later ruled out for the rest of the season.
