Temetrius Jamel “Ja” Morant (born August 10, 1999) is a professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association for the Memphis Grizzlies.

He was a unanimous first-team All-American as a sophomore with the Murray State Racers in college basketball in 2019.

In the 2019 NBA draft, the Grizzlies picked him with the second overall pick, and he was voted NBA Rookie of the Year in 2020.

Morant was selected to his first NBA All Star Game as a starter in 2022.

Despite being awarded All-Region Most Valuable Player three times and receiving All-State honors at Crestwood High School in Sumter, South Carolina, Morant was very minimally recruited by NCAA Division I institutions and was unranked by recruiting agencies.

He made an immediate impact at Murray State University, winning first-team all-Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) accolades as a freshman.

He had a career year as a sophomore, winning the OVC Player of the Year and leading the NCAA in assists. Morant was also the only player in NCAA history to average 20 points and 10 assists per game in a single season as a sophomore.

 

 

Career

Ja Morant attended Crestwood High School in Sumter, South Carolina.

Morant left as its all-time leading scorer, with 1,679 points.

Morant was also a three-time All-Region Most Valuable Player in high school (MVP).

On November 10, 2017, Morant debuted for Murray State.

He was the seventh freshman in the last 25 years to have 150 assists, 150 rebounds, and 10 blocks while shooting at least 42% from the floor.

Morant was chosen to the John R. Wooden Award’s midseason top 25 watch list on January 10, 2019.

He broke the school record for most assists in a single game with 18, while scoring 26 points against UT Martin on the same day.

On January 19, he set a new scoring career high by scoring 40 points, 11 assists, and 5 steals while shooting 21-of-21 from the free throw line in a win over SIU Edwardsville.

Morant made history by being the only player in NCAA history to average at least 20 points and 10 assists per game in a single season.

Morant declared his desire to forego his last two seasons of collegiate eligibility and declare for the 2019 NBA draft after Murray State’s loss in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

He was taken as the second overall pick by the Memphis Grizzlies.

In that season he was also selected to represent team USA in the Rising Stars Game.

At the end of the season, he was named the NBA Rookie of the Year and earned the NBA All-Rookie First Team honor.

On December 23, 2020, Morant recorded a career-high 44 points, alongside nine assists, two rebounds, and two steals in a 131–119 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

With the eighth and final playoff spot on the line in the newly implemented Play-In Tournament, Morant scored 35 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out six assists to lead Memphis to a 117–112 overtime win over the Golden State Warriors, securing the Grizzlies’ first postseason berth in four seasons.

He made his NBA playoff debut two days later, scoring 26 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in Game 1 of the Grizzlies’ 112–109 surprise victory against the top-seeded Utah Jazz.

In Game 2, Morant added 47 points and seven assists, but Memphis fell short, 141–129. The Grizzlies were eliminated in five games, losing the series.

Morant was named to his first All-Star Game as a member of the West Team.

Morant had his fourth career triple-double the next day, scoring 30 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists in a 119–109 win over the Utah Jazz.

In a 123–119 loss against the Portland Trail Blazers on February 16, Morant tied his career high with 44 points.
