Joshua Giddey or simply Josh Giddey is  19-year-old professional basketball player for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA.

Giddey is Australian and was born 10, October, 2002 in Melbourne, Victoria.

He holds the NBA record as the youngest player in the 75-year chapter of the NBA to record a triple double, snatching the record from fellow youngster LaMelo Ball.

Giddey was at 19 years, 84 days old when he set the record.

He is the first rookie since Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson in 1961 to record three consecutive triple-doubles as a rookie.

He also represented the Rooks in the NBA skills challenge placing 2nd.

 

 

 

Early Life

Josh Giddey grew up in Yarraville, Victoria, and attended St Kevin’s College in Melbourne from Year 7 to 10.

Warrick Giddey, Giddey’s father, was a professional basketball player for the Melbourne Tigers in Australia for many years.

Kim, his mum, was a member of the Women’s National Basketball League’s Tigers.

Hannah Giddey, Giddey’s sister, is a forward for the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles.

He joined the NBA Global Academy, a training facility at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra, as one of Australia’s best basketball talents.


Giddey turned down offers from several NCAA Division I programs, including Arizona.
Giddey received most valuable player (MVP) accolades after helping the NBA Global Academy win the Torneo Junior Ciutat de L’Hospitalet in Barcelona in January 2020.

Josh went on to sign with the Adelaide 36ers of the National Basketball League (NBL) as a part of the league’s Next Stars program to develop NBA draft prospects, and he became the first Australian player to be a part of the program.

In a league game loss to the New Zealand Breakers, Giddey became the youngest player ever in the NBL to record a triple double.

He won the Rookie of the year award in the NBL.

Josh Giddey announced his intention to enter the NBA draft in 2021, as he was expected to be a lottery pick.

On July 29, he was selected as the Oklahoma City Thunder’s sixth overall pick, and on August 8, he signed a contract with the team.

He injured his ankle five minutes into his NBA Summer League debut the same day and was declared out for the rest of the competition as a precaution.

After his debut loss and a string of good performances for the Thunder, Giddey was named the NBA Western Conference Rookie of the Month for games played in October/November.

Giddey has also represented the under-17 team in Australia, helping them to the gold medal at the 2019 FIBA Under-17 Oceania Championship in New Caledonia.

He has also represented the Aussie senior team and became the youngest player to play for the senior team since Ben Simmons did so in 2013.
