Gary Harris was born in Fishers, Indiana to Gary and Joy Harris on 14 September, 1994.
Gary played College basketball for the Michigan State Spartans between 2012-2014.

Career
In Fishers, Indiana, Harris attended Hamilton Southeastern High School before signing a letter of intent to play college basketball for the Michigan State Spartans in November 2011.
He led Hamilton SE to a 17–4 record as a sophomore, averaging 14 points, four rebounds, two assists, and three steals per game.
He led the Royals to a 20–4 record and a trip to the Class 4A regional finals as a junior in 2010–11, averaging 18.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.7 steals per game while leading them to only their second sectional victory in school history.
He had a school-record 1540 points (16.7 ppg), 467 rebounds (5.1 rpg), 232 assists (2.5 apg), and 232 steals throughout his high school career (2.5 spg).
Harris was voted Big Ten Freshman of the Year as a freshman at Michigan State University in 2012–13, becoming the first Spartan to earn the accolade since 1986.
He was also named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and second-team All-Big Ten. He averaged 12.9 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.2 steals in 29.7 minutes per game in 34 games with 33 starts.
On April 14, 2014, Harris declared for the NBA draft, forgoing his final two years of college eligibility.
The Chicago Bulls selected Harris with the 19th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft.
On draft night, he was dealt to the Denver Nuggets for Doug McDermott (11th selection) and Anthony Randolph, along with Jusuf Nurkić (16th pick) and a second round pick.
He signed his rookie scale contract with the Nuggets on July 31.
On November 14, Harris made his NBA debut against the Indiana Pacers. In a 108–87 triumph, he had 13 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block in 18 minutes of play.
He didn’t match that amount for the rest of the season, tying his season high of 13 points against the Los Angeles Clippers in the second-to-last game of the season.
