Alfred Joel Horford Reynoso commonly known as Al Horford (born June 3, 1986) is a professional basketball player from the Dominican Republic who currently plays for the Boston Celtics who has a net worth of $60 million. 

With that, Horford is the highest-paid Latin American basketball player and a five-time NBA All-Star.

His wife is 2003 Miss Universe Amelia Vega.

Internationally, he plays for the national squad of the Dominican Republic.

He was a starting center for the Florida Gators in collegiate basketball, where he helped them win back-to-back National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) national championships in 2006 and 2007.

He was selected third overall in the 2007 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks, with whom he spent nine seasons before signing as a free agency with the Celtics in the 2016 off-season.

He signed with the 76ers in the 2019 off-season after three seasons with the Celtics and played a season with them before being moved to the Thunder in the 2020 off-season.

 

Early Life

Al Horford was born in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

His father, Tito Horford, played three years in the NBA and several more overseas.

Career

In the summer of 2000, Horford and his family moved to Lansing, Michigan.

Horford holds seven school records, including most career points (1,239).

Horford earned an athletic scholarship to play for Billy Donovan at the University of Florida, where he was paired with Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, and Taurean Green.

In 2004–05, he had an early impact for the Gators, starting at center in the front court alongside David Lee and helping the team win the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

On April 2, 2007, the Gators became the first team since the 1991–92 Duke Blue Devils to repeat as national champions, and the first to do so with the same starting lineup.

Horford, Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, and Taurean Green all declared for the NBA draft three days later.

Horford was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the third overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft.

On July 9, he signed his rookie scale contract with the Hawks.

As a rookie, Horford was the only player unanimously selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team; he was also runner-up for Rookie of the Year honors and was named Rookie of the Month on four occasions.

Between 2008 and 2011 he had back to back all-star selections.

On February 28, he recorded his 200th career double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds in an 87–76 win over the Charlotte Hornets.

With a 48–34 record, the Hawks entered the playoffs as the fourth seed in the East.

They advanced through to the second round where they were swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second straight year.

In 2016 Horford signed a four-year, $113 million contract with the Boston Celtics.

He played in the first three games of the season for the squad, but subsequently missed nine games due to a concussion.

He returned to action and had 18 points and 11 rebounds in a 94–92 slim win over the Detroit Pistons.

The Celtics advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals, where the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated them 4–1.

On July 10, 2019, Horford signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.

An unrestricted free agent, Horford signed a four-year, $97 million (with $12 million in bonuses) contract.

After a year in Philly Horford was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

On March 27, 2021, the Thunder announced that he would sit out the rest of the season as the team prioritized developing its younger players.

Horford was termed as “too old”.

Trade

In his return to the Celtics, Horford was traded along with Moses Brown, and a 2023 second round draft pick from the Thunder in exchange for guard Kemba Walker, the 16th overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft, and a 2025 second round draft pick.

Also Horford has been a member of the national basketball team of the Dominican Republic since 2008.

Al Horford won a bronze medal and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship.
