What Did Gary Morton Die Of?

Gary Morton died of lung cancer on March 30 1999 in Palm Springs, California. He was 74 years then.

Gary Morton and Lucille Ball

Before meeting Lucille Ball, Morton married actress Susan Morrow on 17 December 1953. However, their marriage was short-lived. They separated a year later in August 1954 and on 11 July 1957, a judge annulled the marriage in Los Angeles.

So in 1960, Gary Morton met his second wife Lucille Ball in New York City. They married on 19 November 1961 at the Marble Collegiate Church in New York City. Because he was 13 years younger than his wife, he had to sign a prenuptial agreement that he wasn’t in for the money but love.

Morton was involved in the management of his wife Lucille Ball who was an American actress, comedian, and producer. He also served on Desilu Productions as one of the board of directors.  After the sale of Desilu Productions to Gulf+Western in 1967, Gary helped his wife to form Lucille Ball Productions. This move was to help with movie production.

Gary served as an executive producer of Ball’s third series “Here’s Lucy” from 1968 to 1974. He was also the co-executive producer of her 1968 series “Life with Lucy”. Apart from this, Morton also warmed up Ball’s audiences before her entrance. He acted sometimes in some of the films. For example, he played a fictional borscht belt comedian Sherman Hart in “Lenny” which was released in 1974.

Sadly, on 18 April 1989, Lucille was admitted for experiencing severe chest pains. She underwent surgery to repair her aorta after being diagnosed with a dissecting aortic aneurysm. On April 26, Ball was also admitted after waking up with severe back pain. This made her lose consciousness. She died at the age of 77 and was buried closer to her mother.

After the death of his beloved wife in 1989, Gary married again in 1996. He married a professional golfer Susie McAllister from 1996 until his death in 1999.
